attacking and taking over settlements

Hi,
I have come across a homestead that on scouting says it is completely unprotected. When I attack it, I win and get mars dollars. i was under the impression that at this point I also took over the settlement but this does not appear to be happening......any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jodenton,
When you attack a homestead and win, the reward is mars dollars, however you do not take over the homestead.
When you find a settlement, you may either: Scout, Attack, or Join. If you attack the settlement successfully, you will then govern the settlement.
You will need a high weapons level to be sucessful on settlement attacks.
