I'm a web developer, but I don't recommend it because I'm not really into more competition in an already glutted field.  What are your skills? What do you like to do (not your favorite hobby, but you second and third favorites).

I frame houses for a living. Obviously right now is a bad time to get into anything with construction. One thing I see, at least in the west, the thing in the near future is going to be wind power, natural resources. There is a huge demand of workers on all levels of building and developing these giant wind mills. Now is the time to get into this while they so desperately need workers. Most companies will even pay for your education. Whatever it is you like to do, I'm sure there is a place for you in either developing or building these things. Not to mention excellent pay.

This is something that if you are educated in this now, not only is there plenty of jobs waiting now, in the future when this really gets going, you will be already educated and ready to do it, companies will fight for your knowledge.

i've been working at a computer science degree. So i've had about 2-3 years of programming mainly java and C++. It's funny because i was planning on working on web development certificate after i get my comp science undergrad. I didn't know there wasn't much room left in this field. I'm getting second thoughts now, I definately don't want to compete with anthraxus cuz i'll get owned.

Really you should look into the job market in your area.  I know that where I live, the job market for web developers is pretty glutted.  If you ae still in school you should look into mainframe coding (COBOL and Fortran).  Those older systems are still vital for many businesses, and it is very difficult to find younger programmers that know how to work with them.  DBA is always a good choice too, and in my experience a fairly easy job for the most part with a pretty good payrate.

i don't know i always found database stuff kind of dry and boring. Too abstract and businessy. I always like something where i can see the results while I do it kind of thing. Like graphical stuff. that's why i like web design or working on graphical user interfaces kind of stuff. This is kind of unrelated but i hate C and assembly language stuff too. There's so much unimportant details in it. That's why i like higher level languages like Java. I was advised by my career councillor to work on HCI (human computer interaction) stuff because she feels i'm more of a people person. We cooked up an idea that involved making software to help kids with autism.

I'm a semi full time student as well. When I'm not in class I'm a fishing guide as well as an "in store expert" at a tackle shop (cheesy title i know) I'm going to school to be an elementry school teacher because I want to leave knowing I made some positive differance for others. (and have summers off to do what i really love. Fishing!)
