Cake ingredients:

1 3/4 Cups all purpous flour
1Cup, less 1 Tbsp UNSWEETENED cocoa powder
1 1/4 tsp baking soda
1/8 tsp salt
3/4 Cup (1 1/2 sticks)butter, softened
2/3 Cup granulated sugar
2/3 Cup firmly packed light brown sugar
2 Lg. eggs
2 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 Cup buttermilk

Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Grease two 9" cake pans
Mix flour, cocoa, baking soda together and salt in a med. bowl.
In a larger bowl, beat butter, granulated sugar and brown sugar @MED speed until light and fluffy.
Add 1 egg at a time, beating well. Add vanilla.
At low speed, alternately beat flour mixture and buttermilk just until blended.
Bake cakes for 25 to 30 min.

Frosting ingredients:

1Cup (2 sticks)butter, softened
3 Cups confectioners sugar, sifted
6 oz. (6 squares)  unsweetened chocolate, melted
4 tsp vanilla
Chocolate shavings, for top of cake

Beat butter and sugar @MED speed until light and fluffy.
Add melted chocolate and vanilla.
Continue beating until shiny and smooth.

After frosting, let cake stand for about 30 min. before sprinkling with chocolate shavings.

45 min. prep. time, serves 12.

Wow, that sounds great Jen!!!! I have a from-scratch choc cake I make, but this one sounds fantastic as well!  DH's birthday is Feb6, I might just have to try it out! Tongue  When I do, I'll post the "review"!
